Foundations

Foundations is a new type of Critical Reading course, designed for students developing their English skills. Foundations teaches the fundamentals and secrets of rhetorical reading: academic reading that prepares students for the reading on the SAT and advanced level English courses.

In Foundations, students are taught to identify the fundamental issues in academic writing: identifying an author’s bias, learning to spot words that indicate a positive, negative, and neutral tone, and learning where in the passage the “main point” will appear.

More broadly, students will learn to…

  • Master critical reading techniques needed for the SAT and advanced-level reading
  • Sharpen writing skills with nightly critical reading assignments
  • Receive daily personalized feedback on assignments from master English teachers
  • Grasp the sophisticated skills needed for reading in college and beyond

Foundations runs on Sundays, from July 13 through August 17, with nightly homework and feedback from our teacher throughout the class.
